relax and reflect

I have to admit I learned a lot from Web 2.0. Sometimes it's a little overwhelming how much new technology-related stuff is out there and how fast it's all happening. Having said that, I am glad I work for a library system that is committed to staying abreast of all these exciting new developments. Thanks for making this training available to us!

gaming

This doesn't do much for me, although I like to play mah jong my computer at home.

maps and geotagging

This is cool.

avatars and second life

there's something creepy about this.

online applications and tools

okay

search engines

Google seems to work fine, but it's interesting to know there are other options.

podcasts

Couldn't get past the complicated business regarding downloading the podcast software. I'll have to take it on faith that this is worthwhile.

image generators

Seems like a lot of nonsense for teenagers to play with.

del.icio.us

This seems pretty useful. I've tagged a couple of things and it's convinient to have them readily accessable. Onward.

Wikiwikiwikiwiki

I have seen wiki and I am now suffering from communication overload. Good grief. How much more connected are we going to get? There are probably uses for this, but most of what I've seen has been pretty ephemeral. I looked at the wiki site WetPaint.com and didn't really see anything interesting. Mostly silly stuff concerning cats and stuff.

videos won't play

Is it just me? I've tried to play videos on YouTube and now as part of the Wiki lesson but they won't play. It starts to play for 2-3 seconds, then stops for 10-15 seconds or so, then plays for a couple of seconds, then stops, then I get frustrated and give up. Anybody know what gives? I trying to play the video that explains what Wikis are.

YouTube

I'm already familiar with YouTube so this was fun. I set up an account which I'm not sure how I would actually use. The videos won't play, though. It plays briefly, then stops for a long time, then plays a little, then stops... Very frustrating.

Facebook

So I set up a Facebook account and browsed around the network to see if there was anyone I knew from high school there. Didn't recognize any of the people from my class who were signed up, but my graduating class was huge, so no surprise. The setup was a little confusing, but maybe one gets better at these things the more one does them...

Flickr

I messed around with Flickr. It's quite an amazing site. I may actually post some of my photos there. The idea that the whole world (literally, THE WHOLE WORLD!) could look at my photographs is a little mind-blowing. We live in amazing times.

Streaming music

Just looked at the streaming music module. Everything seems very geared towards 20-somethings and new music, which is great if that's your bag. I like the old stuff, so I don't see much there for me. Interesting, tho.

RSS feeds

I read about RSS feeds and even linked to a couple of things that interest me. On to the next chapter!

First instant message

I goofed and sent a blank post to my blog. Oh well. I'll try again. I just sent and received my first instant message. Since the person I was messaging we just a few feet away I didn't really get the full effect, but I can see it would be fun to be able to do that with someone who is far away.

IM not

I read the info on instant messaging but have not actually done it. I guess there is no one I want to talk to that bad. But seriously, I'm sure I will eventually try it since it is apparantly now part of our world, for better or for worse. Can you tell I'm still emeshed in the 20th century?

I'm back...

After several days of not "blogging" (this is a word?) I am back on the air. I spent some time with one of my smart co-workers yesterday who helped me get straightened out, organized, and back on track. Actually, I think all this stuff is fascinating, just a lot to take in. In my non-SIL life I just bought a new laptop computer - my first laptop - and it has Vista, so I am also learning how to use that. I also got an iPod Shuffle and am learning how to use it and iTunes. What a wonderful device!! Thanks to everyone who posted comments to my rather lame site. It will improve now that I understand a little more of what I'm doing. I may even try to post some photos of Edmonds if I can figure out how to do it. One of the best places to see Edmonds is from the roof garden of the library. I am enjoying reading some of the other blogs, many of which are wonderfully creative and entertaining.

Oops...I did it again

Well, I've managed to mess this up pretty thoroughly. So far I have inadvertantly deleted the header (and I can't find it anywhere), and the photo I tried to add has also disappeared into the ether. I am undaunted! I will keep trying!

another attempt at blogging

I haven't quite got the hang of this yet. When I sit down to add an entry to my blog I can't think of anything to say except it's another beautiful day here in Edmonds with all the spring flowers blooming. I may try to add some photos if I can figure out how to do it.

Another day in paradise

In this blog I will attempt to describe the day-to-day pleasantness of the town of Edmonds and its surrounding scenery.
